The world of handheld cameras have shifted violently across the “what cool stuff can I do now” plateau with the introduction of the Canon 550d (or the Rebel T2i in the US). I’m not a Canon advocate by any means, but this piece of equipment even got me thinking twice.
The 18 MP resolution, the ability to shoot in 1080p HD, a super fast DIGIC 4 processor are to name a few, some of the features to be packed into the 550d, albeit a bit small in the hands for my liking. With newer versions of the Panasonic Lumix and Canon Ixus sporting HD capabilities, the capabilities by adding HD video onto a DSLR open a whole new chapter in the market for marketing gurus in the camera industry.
Mastering HD video skills on a device which sits neatly on your palm is a difficult task, but add in a tripod, an external mic and hey presto you can be shooting TV quality documentaries in no time. This could quickly call the end of the traditional handycam as many new purchases for still and moving footage can be obtained from a device starting from £650 including the 18-55mm kit lens. It’s no longer DSLR v point and clicks, the evolution is creating the battleground for DSLR’s v digital camcorders.
